Several people were injured and one person was hospitalized after a series of crashes in Deerfield Beach on Friday afternoon, October 23, 2026, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office. Deputies said they received a report of a hit-and-run near Northeast 54th Street and Federal Highway at about 2:47 p.m. A vehicle that deputies said was stolen collided with three other cars, and the people in those vehicles sustained minor injuries.
Deputies said the driver did not stay. The vehicle was then involved in a second crash at North Federal Highway and Hillsboro Boulevard, where it was disabled. The other driver in that crash suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue crews responded at about 2:50 p.m., evaluated the people involved, and transported one person to a hospital.
According to deputies, a person who stopped to help then became involved. The sheriff’s office said the driver tried to take that person’s vehicle, the two struggled over it, and the vehicle was put in drive, sped away, and crashed into a gas station convenience store near Hillsboro Boulevard. Fire rescue personnel said the building did not appear to have significant structural damage. A 44-year-old woman was arrested, and deputies listed charges including carjacking, kidnapping, grand theft, and hit-and-run. Those allegations have not been tested in court, and the investigation remains active. No names of the injured people were released. If a Driver Flees Your Crash, the First Days Matter
A hit-and-run leaves injured people with two problems at once: getting medical care and figuring out how the bills will be paid. If you are able, call 911, ask for a police report, and get the names of witnesses. Photograph the vehicles and the scene, and write down what you remember about the fleeing vehicle while it is fresh. Businesses along Federal Highway, including gas stations, often have surveillance cameras, but that video can be overwritten within days, so asking early for it to be preserved matters.
Get medical care promptly even if you feel only sore at first. Florida personal injury protection, often called PIP, can pay a portion of medical bills and lost wages regardless of fault, but treatment generally must begin within 14 days for PIP benefits to apply. Keep the crash report, medical records, and every insurance letter together, and be cautious about giving a recorded statement to another insurer before you understand how it may be used.
Stolen Vehicles, Insurance, and Fault in Florida
Crashes involving a vehicle driven without the owner’s permission raise a coverage problem that surprises many people: the owner’s insurance may not cover a driver who took the vehicle without permission. That is one reason your own uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage can matter after a hit-and-run, along with PIP.
Florida follows modified comparative negligence: a recovery is reduced by the claimant’s percentage of fault, and it is barred entirely if the claimant is found more than 50% at fault. An arrest and early reports are not a final decision about civil fault or about what any insurer must pay. Deadlines can also apply, so get advice promptly rather than relying on an insurer’s timeline.
