Two people were killed and one person was seriously injured in a three-vehicle crash on Alligator Alley in Broward County shortly before 10 p.m. on Saturday, October 31, 2026, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The crash happened on eastbound Interstate 75, just west of Mile Marker 45.

Troopers said a Toyota Camry was traveling east in the outside lane when its driver failed to maintain control of the car and it traveled off the road to the right. A U-Haul truck was parked on the outside paved shoulder of the eastbound lanes at the same location, and the front of the Camry struck the back of the U-Haul. That impact redirected the Camry into the path of a BMW sport utility vehicle traveling east in the inside lane. The left front of the Camry then struck the right side of the BMW, propelling the BMW in a northeast direction and causing it to overturn, the Highway Patrol said.

Both people in the Camry were pronounced dead at the scene. The sole occupant of the U-Haul suffered minor injuries. The driver of the BMW had minor injuries, and a passenger in the BMW suffered serious injuries and was hospitalized. No names were released in the Highway Patrol’s summary, and troopers said the crash remains under investigation. Shoulder Stops and Passing Traffic: A Dangerous Combination

This crash began with a vehicle stopped on a highway shoulder and a second vehicle leaving its lane. If you must stop on a highway shoulder, pull as far off the traveled lanes as you can, turn on your hazard lights, and call for help. Stay belted inside the vehicle if traffic is passing close by, or move well away from the roadway if you can do so safely. Drivers approaching a stopped vehicle should move over a lane when it is safe, or slow down — Florida’s Move Over law covers stopped vehicles displaying warning signals, not only emergency vehicles.

In a chain-reaction crash like this one, evidence disappears quickly. Vehicles are repaired or salvaged, and camera footage can be overwritten. If you are able, photograph the scene and the vehicles, save any dashcam video, and keep the crash report, medical records, and every insurance letter in one file.

Medical Care, Insurance, and Fault in Florida

Get medical care promptly after any serious crash, even if you feel only sore at first. Florida personal injury protection, often called PIP, can pay a portion of medical bills and lost wages regardless of fault, but treatment generally must begin within 14 days for PIP benefits to apply. A multi-vehicle crash can involve several policies at once, including PIP, bodily injury coverage, and uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage, and which apply is not always clear at first.

Florida follows modified comparative negligence: a recovery is reduced by the claimant’s percentage of fault, and it is barred entirely if the claimant is found more than 50% at fault. An early Highway Patrol summary is not a final decision about fault or about any person’s claim, particularly while an investigation is still open. Be cautious about giving a recorded statement to another driver’s insurer before you understand how it may be used.
