Early on Monday, October 19, 2026, a motorcyclist was hospitalized after a crash in Miami Lakes, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office. Deputies responded at about 5:49 a.m. to the area of Northwest 57th Avenue and Miami Lakes Drive. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue transported the rider by air to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center. The driver of the other vehicle remained at the scene. Authorities had not released further information about the crash, and they have not stated what caused it or whether anyone was at fault.

Get Medical Care First

After any motorcycle crash, your health comes first. Get checked by a medical professional right away, even if you feel okay at the scene — some injuries are not obvious in the first hours. Follow-up care matters too, both for your recovery and for documenting your injuries. Where Florida’s Personal Injury Protection (PIP) benefits apply, Florida law generally requires you to seek initial treatment within 14 days of the crash, so do not delay. Keep copies of every bill, discharge paper, prescription, and work note.

Preserve the Evidence Early

Motorcycle cases often turn on physical evidence that disappears quickly. If you can do so safely — or ask a family member to help — keep your helmet, jacket, gloves, and other gear exactly as they were after the crash; do not wash or repair them. Do not repair or sell the motorcycle before it is documented and inspected. Save photos and video from the scene, the names and phone numbers of any witnesses, and any nearby camera footage you know about, and request a copy of the crash report. Skid marks fade, vehicles get fixed, and surveillance video is often erased within days, so early action protects your claim.

Check Your Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage

Even when the other driver stays at the scene, that driver’s insurance may be too small to cover a serious injury — or there may be a dispute about coverage. Uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage on your own policy can be an important source of recovery in that situation. An attorney can review all of the policies that might apply before you settle anything.

How Fault Works in Florida

Florida follows modified comparative negligence. That means your compensation is reduced by your percentage of fault, and if you are found more than 50% at fault, you cannot recover damages at all. Because fault percentages matter so much, do not guess or speculate about what caused a crash — including to an insurance adjuster — before the facts are investigated. Florida also generally gives injured people two years from the date of a crash to file a negligence lawsuit, and missing that deadline can end a claim, so get advice promptly.

Be Careful With Recorded Statements

Insurance companies often call within days and ask for a recorded statement. You are not required to guess, and a rushed statement can be used against you later. It is reasonable to say you are still receiving treatment and will respond after you have had legal advice.
